The incredible thing is, even up close, I still feel like I could be looking at a photograph of an actual animal, or a sculpture at the very least, rather than just layers of paint. Amazing work.

I first thought there were many slices but now I think there are only 3 or 4 layers. So for example a goldfish bottom layer would be fins, then next layer body and top layer the tail. The shadows created by the painting add immensely to the effect. I hope many people make their own versions. This is a great idea. It reminds me of a ship in a bottle. Many models in Starcraft are meant to be seen from top down so the Protoss Mothership might be a good candidate.
